Roman, you have 4 goldfish in a 5 gallon aquarium, of course it stinks. But not only does it smell, you can bet that that water is in an awful state for those goldfish. They are likely suffering from ammonia poisoning which can cause gill and tissue damage, but more commonly death.

    Please return the goldfish.

well goldfish are notorious for producing a lot of ammonia. you might need to get a better filter. You also might have too many goldfish for your tank, you didnt specify how many you had and how many gallons the tank is.

Goldfish produce a ton of Ammonia, so if you have multiple fish in a small tank they are going to produce a ton. if it smells really bad, imagine how much ammonia is in there poisoning them. I am sure they are on the worse end of the stick. A new filter fewer goldfish if possible seperate them. and frequent water changes. your tank still needs to cycle. you should get an ammonia test kit and some water strips to test nitrites, nitrates, Alkalinity, PH and Hardness and then read up on the Nitrogen cycle

Goldfishes are known for making alot of waste, which in turn makes the water stink and smell polluted. The only way would be to do frequent water changes and clean the tank. good luck.

OK two questions, how big is your tank and how many fish do you have in it. IF you have over one inch of fish per gallon then your tank is over populated and that may help to cause the bad smell. IF your tank is not over populated then maybe you are having a filtration issue, my rule of thumb with filtration is that the total amount of water in your tank should cycle around 10 times per hour (example: a 20 gallon tank should have a 200 gallon per hour filter on it).

Sorry to tell you, but that is what goldfish are like. They are very dirty fish and produce a lot of waste and ammonia. It all depends on how big your fish are, how big your aquarium is and how stocked you are with gold fish. If you are not over stocked and are still having this problem even with weekly water changes I suggest getting a stronger filter, or finding some fish new homes. You can try7 adding live plants which help with ammonia and nitrate levels, but that will only help so much. I had the same problem with my 9 and 10 inch oscars and I got so tired of having the problem that I found them new homes and made my tank into a community aquarium (much nicer to look at anyway). I hope my suggestions help. Good Luck.

Reading the answers from others, they all seemed,"right on" however no one mentioned feeding. The way you feed goldfish is very important! If you have enough floating gasses (anacharis)or for a very large tank, you might have hyacinth? In any case, you don’t need to feed extra fish food it will only foul your tank.Goldfish get enough algea from the plants to keep them healthy in most cases.
    Good luck.

You have too many fish in a small tank. You think your room stinks…how do you think the fish feel? You can leave your room for relief…there in there all the time, with no break. You cant stand it….THEY cant stand it. Im sure your not like doing it to like torture your fish…but you should definatly get a bigger tank, and a stronger filter. For now, change the water everyday, or every other day. But obviously your going to have to do something for these poor fish…Good luck!
