Why Did The Koi Eat The Goldfish?
So, today, my friend and I decided that it would be fun to release some goldfish into a large Koi pond. We didn’t really want people to know what we were doing, so we had to be sneaky and toss the goldfish one by one into the pond. However, no sooner would they plop into the water than they’d be eaten by one of the Koi! I had researched this before the release, and everything I’d read said that Koi only ate other fish fry and not actual, full-grown fish. Had we been able to place them in the water slowly, rather than a small toss, would they have been eaten? Did the Koi mistake them for food? Only one fish managed to swim away. Will he be left alone because the Koi recognize him as a fish?

any fish can and will eat smaller fish.
that’s just the way they work…opportunistic feeders, they are.
if you had dumped them all in at once i think a few more would have made it a little longer, but all (including the one that DID get away) will probably get eaten.
it sounds like the koi were being underfed.

Is your goldfish small in size than your Koi.this is because koi like to eat small fish

I wouldn’t be surprised when you see koi in a pond and if you get near they tend to go to the surface "gasping for air" you can throw anything that fits and they will chew on it and decide whether not to swallow, he must have mistaken it for food.
Koi don’t normally eat small fish since they don’t really have teeth maybe really small ones to swallow.

This is a no-brainer. The Koi were hungry and you fed them. Koi are simply Carp, and Carp will eat anything. Hense, they are called garbage fish.

Demon L,
I found a couple cents and I’ll spend them here:
While that may have seemed ‘fun’ at the time, keep in mind the money and time people invest into their Koi ponds. Now, knowing that you had to be ’sneaky’ about these shenanigans, do you think it would still be ‘fun’ if you were caught in the act of feeding this person’s Koi with potentially diseased ‘food’? I would not recommend you or your friend to practice such behavior in the future as it could be detrimental to your health at worst, or inconvenient to your freedoms at best.

Quantify ‘Fun’. It was certainly no fun for the poor Goldfish who were killed, probably no fun for the poor Koi who ate them either because fish will eat anything they can fit in their mouths so we have to ensure we feed them responsibly as they may get ill & die from either disease or getting the fish stuck in their throats. By all accounts not much fun for you & your irresponsible friend who were far too busy being furtive to enjoy the situation & finally no fun for the poor owner of the Koi who may discover their prized & probably also much loved loved fishes suffering. What did you post the sorry tale on here for, perhaps you though you would gain some esteem? You are both complete morons.

Guess your goldfish are too small.Fish can’t distinguish food from pomd mates. If it fits in its mouth, then it may be food.
