Unless you’re thinking about razor blades, fish are smarter than that… They won’t be rubbing on something that will skewer them! Give them something to scratch on… A rough rock is great. If you notice our goldfish rubbing on it repeatedly, check into some meds for parasites… Early detection system… If they are constantly rubbing this rough rock, they are trying to dislodge something from their skin. Yes Goldfish have skin, underneath a layer of sclaes, which is underneath a slime coat. Parasites will latch onto the skin, can dislodge scales and ruin the slime coat. the slime coat is what helps the fish keep it’s body in balance.
For a ten gallon tank, about half a tablespoon of salt isn’t a bad thing to put in but isn’t a must.
Goldfish are a part of the Carp family with a very close relation to Koi. Goldfish can’t be place specifically in Asia, although it is most likely since they did develope the Koi.
Anything of the Carp family are slow movers, omnivorous, and enjoy hidey holes.
Depending on the type of goldfish, they would like an anchor, Fantails are notorious for getting float problems. All fish have a swim bladder, this helps them keep their bodies oriented with their surrundings. For some reason, fantails seem to have issues, so an arch ot bridge that they can get under and let it hold them down for a while is good for them. Most fish will enjoy a cover of some sort, whether it’s a bunch of plants, plastic or real, a good rock, a piece of treated wood, etc.
Good Luck!
goldfish are very slow…so you should be very careful of any sharp edges of any decor you add..I would suggest a silk artificial plant….and some colorful big pebbles to make it look good…thts abt it…something like a ‘No fishing’ sign with all rounded edges and corners would do..but be careful or else the goldfish might hurt himself…take care…
Rounded items that dont scratch them, also those weeds they sell my fish seem to like them and I also have the plastic ones too.
PS I think they are from the carp family of fish perhaps someone knows more.
