Is is ok to have big and small Fantail goldfish in the same tank?

My first batch of Fantail fish have started to die off and only a few are still alive, it seems so lonely with a few old fish swimming and not much liveliness in tank.

I had fish added in the tank before (around the same size) but one of them attacks the existing fish and tried to eat it's whole tail [managed to get more than half :( ]. My parents won't allow me to get new fish because it might be violent although natural for the fish to eat each other. My question is has anyone ever had problems with adding smaller fish to a tank with medium-large fish? and or do you recommend me to add new fish. A pet owner or fish breeders advice would be most welcome but all with experience also great appreciated.

I think it's rare for goldfish to attack each other. I do have a vague recollection one did, but I went through a lot of of goldfish. I think this is an isolated incident. You just have one amgry fish.

Goldfish shouldn't be aggressive unless something's terribly wrong. The big ones actually look out for the little ones. They are advanced lifeforms. Arrange with a little wire a jingle bell on one end of the wire and hook the wire securely over the edge of the tank so that part of the wire sits in the water and the rest of the wire kinda rocks on the edge with the bell on the outside of the tank. Every time the goldfish nudge the wire inside and the bell jingles, give them a little treat. They'll learn to play with the bell. I set up several bells of different tones and they show off with pretty music for new faces looking in at them.

different sizes of goldfish can live together peacefully, after you add new fish just watch them to make sure everything is okay
I see people here talk about aggressive goldfish but I have raised goldfish for 35 yrs and never had a mean one

You should get fish that are the same size. Tails look like plants to some kinds of fish. I had problems like yours. That's why I only buy fish that are the same size. You can add new fish. You should start with one or two. I have experience with gold fish and that's why I know that. To have a lot of fish your aquarium must be big or fish can die. A small aquarium can make fish violent too.

We have three goldfish and one goldenfish (not sure if that is the correct name). The largest goldfish continually attacks the goldenfish….removing scales. Flush the damn thing down the toilet is my solution. Heck, that goldfish attacked my wife's hand and tried to bite her.

The first question you have to ask is why are the first batch dying off. Goldfish will live 25+ years easily in the proper environment.

So you need to figure out why they are dying before you add any additional fish to the tank.

What size is your tank? Goldfish get very large, and produce a lot of waste so you cannot have them in small tanks.

By nature they are not aggressive and it's very rare to see them attach each other with any damage.

your fish will do perfectly fine with the smaller ones. I just added two little fantails (less than one inch long) about a week ago and they get along perfectly fine with the others.

depending on how large your tank is i would say go ahead and try adding new fish. If similar problems occur and your fishys tail becomes food, maybe your just unlucky. Or your fish has a very tasety tail. Either one.

Whatever you do i hope it works out and brings your tank back to life! good luck!
