I just noticed a large red splotch on my fancy goldfish, what is it?

it’s an red-orange spot on his side that i just noticed so I think it developed sometime today. lately I’ve also realized that he just stays in one area at the top of the tank. I know this could be some sort of illness or disease but I was also thinking that he could have just cut himself on a plant or something (least probable). and lastly a few days ago I gave him a teaspoon of melafix and then the next day I gave him another dose. this was about a week ago. I decided to give it to him because I realized his tail was curling and I didn’t want part of it to break off again was this the right thing to do.

If he is acting lethargic then he is probably sick.

If the sploth is veiny then it is septicimia.
If it looks like an open wound then it is an ulcer.

    Melafix will help both conditions.

Fish get sick because of poor water conditions. Do 25% water changes every other day. I bet he will suddenly recover and heal up.

This site is great for diagnosing- they have photos

your fish is fine as long as fuzz is not growing on it. Goldfish always have red splotchs on them and their tails always are curling. Ask the people u bought it from if you are really worried.

I’m not sure what’s wrong with your goldfish, but I did have one once that used to get spots every now and then. I figured it had cot scratched on something in the tank. But mine often tried to jump out of the tank, so it was very possible

There are a variety of parasites and mold spores that can live in the tank. Some can kill your fish or "eat" their fins. Your best bet is to get in to a pet store and speak to someone there or simply look on the bottles. They will show where splotches may grow and coloring to give you a better idea what your fish might have.
