How many goldfish can i keep in my 30g?
Ok so i’m pretty good with fish. i’ve been keeping them for 3 years now. recently i lost my last tropical fish so i bought a goldfish (a red oranda). i never realized how much more personality goldfish have than tropical so i purchased another (a black moor). i saw a lionhead at the store that’s really interesting looking and now im thinking about getting him (either him or a ranchu).
i know goldfish get pretty big and they’re a lot dirtier so in my opinion 2 should be enough for a 30g…
but i know there must be people out there with 3 in a 30g and I was wondering how they felt about that. is 30g ok for 3 goldfish?
here’s my aquarium specs:
30g
1 and a half inch of gravel (been thinking of taking some out, but probably wont make a difference?)
Emperor 280 with activated carbon and ammonia neutralizing crystals, exactly half-half and 1 large filter pad with activated carbon
Penguin 150 with filter pads with activated carbon
Here’s how i normally maintain my aquarium
Half water change every month + API Stress Coat + API Stress Zyme (bacteria)
2nd week: 10-15% water change + API water clarifying
3rd week: I treat the water with API ammo lock + API water clarifying
4th week: Half water change + API Stress Coat + API Stress Zyme (bacteria) + change of carbon media
I also change the filter pads every 2 months and sometimes (more frequently) every month.
My water is pretty clean and it’s always clear. I also have test kits (liquids) and i never have ammonia problems.
Based on the circumstances,
would it be okay to add a 3rd goldfish?
I’m also planning on replacing my Penguin 150 with a marineland HOT Magnum filter.
both fish were very tiny when i bought them. the red oranda was probably a lil bigger (an inch?) the black moor is tiny. he’s probably not even an inch.
if goldfish like to be kept in pairs, should it be one of its own kind (red oranda + red oranda?) or will he be ok with the black moor? He seems to like him…he follows him around.

Your tank is already overstocked with two goldfish, I’d advise you not add a third.
Fancy goldfish can reach sizes of 6-8", so no less than a 20g is recommended for each, with double the filtration.
Goldfish are playful fish each with their own very unique personalities. That’s why they should be kept in pairs as they don’t do well on their own. However, your 30g tank is only big enough for one fancy goldfish, I would recommend returning one to the pet store. Don’t even think about adding a third.

2 is good, but you may be able to fit one more.

Though I bet many people will soon follow protesting no, I say you can, it’s possible especially since they don’t grow as rapid as feeders.

Depends on the size of the fish and when you plan on either buying a bigger tank or splitting them up in different tanks.
I have better luck when I just stick to the basics. My maintenance is like this:
40% water change every week. I have a python hose hooked up to my R.O water system and I slowly change the water as not to stressed out the fish. I also add microbe lift with every water change and maintain the correct salinity at all times for freshwater fish using aquarium salt.
