How long does it take for goldfish or koi to get color?

I noticed the fry in my pond in late June.
If koi are born with color, then my fry must be goldfish. I have both in my pond. The goldfish are the original feeder fish I used to ‘condition’ my new pond about 3 years ago. Most lived. I have noticed that a couple of them swish their tails differently than the others. I’m thinking maybe I’m going to get some fancy tails in the batch. I guess I should rephrase my question to; when do goldfish fry begin to show color?

both goldfish and koi are gray/brown (natural) color at first, usually they should be showing some color by this time, if you still have babies that haven’t colored by next summer, you should cull them (destroy) get an oscar or something large to feed them to, when you raise babies you need to cull them periodically for deformities and color, you dont want fish that are slow to color
if left alone, all the goldfish and koi will revert back to their wild color in a generation, you have to fight mother nature to keep them colored

I am a pond enthusiast. I keepa backyard pond and three aquariums. I have had experience in breeding fish. I esspecially take pleasure in my koi. To answer your question you must first remember that each individual fry in your pond will develop at a different pace; also take into consideration that koi are apt to change colors. So the answer to your question is controversial depending on which color you are talking about and or whether or not your koi will change color within the first couple years of there life. Koi can live to be seventy five years old you know?
