Goldfish and beta fish?

cherish1230 asked:

happy sunday everyone,

i have a quick question about taking care of goldfish. i recently brought some gold fish yesterday and 3 out of the 6 died. I’ve treated the water with a tap water conditioner and only feed it once, could it be the shock of transferring them from the pet store aquarium water to my aquarium? also, i have one small beta fish…can beta fish and gold fish live together? BTW i also have one small albino frog and an African frog and they seem to get along…i just dont know why the goldfish died. :(

theres lots of reasons why they couldave died but thats not right, you should get a refund! and i dont know if you could keep the beta in with them as it would be difficult to keep the temp cool enough for the goldies but hot enough for the beta and the beta might be mean to the gold fish, spose you could try tho. good luck!

If you get the fish in the bag, what i do, i put the back in the water (tying the top to the top of the tank) And let it be like that for a day or less. And all the fish i had beta and gold live ttogethern harmony, inin factonce my goldfish died my Beta wouldn’t eat until i got a new one.

    1) there are many reasons your goldfish could have died. Goldfish in general, and especially feeders, just seem to have a high mortality rate at the pet store. Could be because they’re cheep so less worry is given to them at the store? Overall, I agree with getting a refund. Check the fish at the store to see if they’ve lost a lot or if theirs are sick.

    2) the betta can live with the goldfish, both of them are hardy and can live away from their “ideal” temps.

    3) African frogs like fish! Just be aware that if the fish can fit in their mouths they are likely to try it :)

Bettas and goldfish should not be together in the same tank, because the goldfish is a cool-water fish, and the Betta is a tropical-water fish. Depending on the goldfish (fancy or plain?) they might nip the Betta’s fins, or the Betta might attack the goldfish. If you care at all about your pets, don’t mix them.

Your frogs will probably be OK with the goldfish. They and Bettas don’t always get along, and they’d probably prefer the cooler water.

The goldfish might have died from high ammonia in the water. Goldfish are notorious for producing a high volume of waste. You did not state the size of tank they were in. The more fish per gallon, the faster the ammonia etc. builds up. Is your tank cycled? Or maybe you got some unhealthy fish that couldn’t take the shock of being moved again? Take them back to the pet store along with a water-sample from their tank in a separate container, ASAP. Maybe they can discover the cause of the deaths, or at least compensate you.

You should get your water tested so you’ll know the PH and other qualities. Does your water-conitioner also remove chloramine? Many water-treatment facilities are using it nowadays.
