Black Moor Goldfish Tank Size (help)!!?
I just got a tank for my room - just a 5 gallon one so I can look at while studying
I think I may have made a big mistake - I have 4 Black Moors in the tank right now. They are very small in size and the tank has many freshwater plants, smooth gravel, a good filter, an aerating bubbler, and no pointy/sharp stuff that’ll hurt their poor eyes
I was under the impression that 1 gallon of water per fish would suffice, but now I have read TEN gallons per goldfish. I have had 4 goldfish (regular variety) and a crayfish for 2 years in a 10 gallon tank, and they are doing excellent.
I know the black moors will get big and I will adjust tank size with time, but will they do alright in the meantime? I really love these fish and don’t want to hurt them, but I just got this tank and I’m not sure what to do. I plan on checking the water w/ test kits weekly, changing water appropriately, etc.
Can it work with lots of TLC??

Your fish seem to be doing great. I agree with most of what people have been writing to you about…just one more thing…Goldfish (any goldfish) are bred from the same species of fish…carp. They are alot dirtier than your average tetra or molly…if your system is good than leave it, if you want a bigger tank, change it. Black Moore can get huge, I had one in a 51/2 gal. for about a year then it got to big and I moved it to my pond…he’s as big as my fist…keep a close eye on your system. You seem to be doing really well.

You must have a very beautiful tank! You MUST of read, it’s not 10 gallons per coldwater fish, it’s 1 or 3 gallons per 1 inch of coldwater fish. Good, I don’t know how many times that I have to mention to fish owners to buy test kits, you must be a experianced and smart owner.

YOUR FISH WILL ONLY GROW AS BIG AS THE TANK YOU PROVIDE FOR THEM,AS I HAVE 5 GOLDFISH IN A 10LT TANK AND THEY WOULD GROW MUCH LARGER IF THEY HAD THE TANK ON THEIR OWN,SO DONT WORRY LOOK AT THE PET SHOPS THEY HAVE HEAPS IN THEM AND IT DOESNT BOTHER THE FISH

I am sorry… goldfish need 20+ gallons of water per fish. Get atleast a 30 gallon tank, though it should be bigger.

Okay, you will here a lot of BS on tank size. Black Moores are the most awesome goldfish there is, so I congradulate you on your judgment there. BUT, it is impossible to keep them in that tank. I know you hate to hear it and it sucks. If you had gone to a 10gallon, you’d be great but while it may be possible its insanely unfair to keep them in the 5 gallon. Its great you realize you might have made a mistake and the fish keeping hobby is all about learning. What I would do is either go get a 10 gallon and use the current equipment, although I would get the most powerful filter you can afford, itll save you time since goldies are so messy. I reccomend a 20-30 gallon hanging power filter. While the eye thing seems like its a diability, they are just as hardy as any other goldfish, and a transfer to a 10gallon will make them more comfortable and give them room to grow. They will be fine to live out their lives in this ten gallon. I’m sorry for the inconvience you have now, but its better to remember that if you want a "formula" for fish compacity, try to use a gallon an inch for full grown length. That means if the average goldfish gets 5 inches long and you have 4 goldfish, you need 5 gallons a fish, and 20 gallons total. But I think using this system leaves space in an aquarium that could still hold a few more fish. Use your best judgment on how many for what tank, you know that you might have made a mistake if you posted here. So get a ten gallon and everyone will be a lot more happy!! Goodluck!!
