Are my fancy goldfish fighting or making out!!?

The last few mornings i have noticed that my fish has a new split in his fins and one or two scales missing. Is he being bullied? They both seem otherwise healthy, it always seems to happen at night as i havn’t noticed any aggression during the day.
I have had problems with keeping nitrate levels down and have had to do lots of water changes,i have 2 x 1.5 inch fish in a 35ltr tank. Do you think a larger tank will help?

HI Emjay, Typically Goldfish are not aggressive so what you are seeing is either breeding behaviour [or mock breeding behaviour in the case of immature fish] or else there is something else wrong like your water quality is poor or your tank is not big enough that may cause this to happen due to territorial issues. Because you have not seen any unusual behaviour there may be some ailment either parasitic or bacterial which is making your fish ‘flash’ or rub against objects in the tank but my immediate guess would be your water quality is making him flash so check your parameters.

They are probably fighting, its not good to have two fancies in the same tank, as they are prone to fighting. I suggest removing one or taking it back to the shop. You may also want to buy a book about them or just simply ask the owner of the petshop you bought them from. Good Luck.

    From my experience:

Goldfish sometime may be aggresive to each other .

This may happend during feeding time .

From the information i found in the website:

    Tank Mates :

Although they will interact with other fish, Goldfish do not need to shoal in the same manner as species such as Tetras, and can therefore be kept as a single specimen with few problems. The addition of tank mates, however, will increase their confidence levels and allow their natural behaviours to be observed at their best.

Different variants of Goldfish can be combined together and will make for a stunning display. However, it is not wise to mix single tailed and fantailed variants as the faster swimming single tailed fish will outcompete the fantails for food. The same is true of mixing dorsal-less variants with their dorsal finned cousins.

There is no ideal number of Goldfish to keep in an aquarium, and the decision is usually driven by the space available. The traditional number for an aquarium is 3, however this is based on the principles of Feng Shui (the mix being 2 gold coloured fish and one black fish) rather than on any real benefit to the fish.

Smaller shoaling fish such as White Cloud Mountain Minnows and certain Danios will thrive in similar aquarium conditions to Goldfish. They should however only be added with caution. Goldfish will eat anything that they can catch and that is small enough to fit into their mouth, while faster swimming small fish may outcompete the Goldfish for food.

From my experience (THE FIRST TIME I KEEP GOLDFISH):

This also happened before to my goldfish that is my big lion head goldfish accidentally suck in one of the eye of my ranchu goldfish ( is a slow swimming goldfish).

What i do is that i take the poor ranchu out to an isolated tank and treat with antiseptic for 3 days. Then i transfered it back to the previous tank and it managed to survive .

And for the lion head i keep it in isolated tank as you see its mouth are really big so i cannot angry about its act .Maybe the fish are not purposely did that.

Hope my past experience do help you.

And I think is better for you to buy a bigger tank as i don’t want what has happen to my fish happen with your fish as well.

    Good luck :p
